Certain airlines will not allow you to fly if your passport expires six months after your scheduled trip. For this trip, your passport should be valid through August 2026.
Airports
The closest airport to San Miguel de Allende is Queretaro. It is the only place we have flown into and out of, and we highly recommend it. It is approximately a 1.5 hour drive (depending on traffic) to San Miguel de Allende. There are direct flights from airports such as IAH and DFW, but flying out of smaller airports like San Antonio, Lubbock, Amarillo, and Dallas Love will likely require a connection. We highly recommend securing a private driver from your airport of choice, as opposed to renting cars. Roads and driving laws in Mexico are quite different from the states and having a driver is a better option. Also, depending on what service you choose, it is just as affordable as renting and there are cabs all around San Miguel de Allende to take you where you need to go.

Taxis
Generally speaking, it’s safe to take one of those green and white taxis that you see all over town. Before you get in the car, though, you’ll want to ask the driver how much they’re going to charge to get you where you want to go. If it seems outrageous, simply say “no, gracias” and wait for another taxi to come along. The driver might then offer you a lower rate, which you are free to accept or reject.
If you’re especially concerned about safety, you can also check that:
* the taxi number is printed in red on the back of the car
* their license is displayed on the dash, and the person in the photo is the person you’re talking to
If you want to schedule a trip in advance, or just call a taxi to come pick you up (vs. hailing one on the street) you can use one of these private taxi services that are considered both safe and reliable. Do note that it can cost double of what it’ll cost to just catch one passing by, but sometimes peace of mind is worth it.

Uber is pretty hit and miss in San Miguel. Some users have been happy with their service, while others complain that drivers often cancel or ask for more than the quoted price. However, if you’re a die-hard fan, or just really want the tracking feature, the app does work here.
